Baedal Minjok to Significantly Increase Number of Riders... "Recruiting Over 1,000 Additional Riders"
Resumption of Baemin Rider Recruitment Suspended Due to COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Baedal Minjok (hereinafter Baemin)'s premium delivery service 'Baemin Riders' is set to secure a large number of riders. They plan to recruit more than 1,000 additional riders to resolve the inconvenience faced by customers and merchants due to a shortage of delivery personnel and to improve delivery quality.
Woowa Brothers (CEO Yoon Hyun-joon), which operates Baemin Riders, announced on the 30th that they recently resumed rider recruitment, which had been halted due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). Baemin Riders is a service where Baemin receives customer orders and handles delivery on behalf of 'restaurants' that do not accept delivery orders other than in-store customers.
According to Woowa Brothers, rider recruitment resumed on the 17th and more than 500 new riders have been hired so far. Baemin plans to continuously increase the number until the new riders exceed 1,000. Until now, the number of Baemin Riders was about 2,100, and after this recruitment ends, it will increase to about 3,000. Earlier, Baemin had suspended rider recruitment in February due to the spread of COVID-19 and social distancing measures. To become a Baemin Rider, one must undergo training on traffic safety and customer response skills, but group training could not be conducted under the COVID-19 situation, which led to this measure.
With the additional rider recruitment, delivery quality issues are also expected to be resolved. There had been complaints about delayed deliveries due to insufficient rider recruitment compared to the increased number of orders. Especially during bad weather when riders tend to avoid work, or during lunch and dinner times when food orders surge, some areas experienced 'distance restriction' measures due to a shortage of riders. Distance restriction is a measure that gradually limits the delivery range when delivery quality is expected to deteriorate excessively due to rain or a sudden increase in orders. Baemin explained that since resuming rider recruitment, the increase in delivery personnel has improved delivery quality and significantly reduced distance restriction measures.

Baemin has also introduced measures to enhance the delivery quality of Baemin Riders. They plan to prioritize Baemin Riders' deliveries in AI-recommended dispatching and provide promotional costs to encourage riders and connectors to prefer Baemin Riders' deliveries. Choi Jin-soo, Head of Two-Wheel Delivery Operations at Woowa Brothers, said, "With the resumption of rider recruitment that was halted due to COVID-19, the inconveniences of customers and merchants are being resolved," and added, "If more than 1,000 riders are recruited, delivery quality is expected to improve significantly."
