The Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters announced on the 29th that it identified the causes of 4,598 fires, accounting for 95.7% of the 4,804 fires that occurred in the province during the first half of this year (January to June). The national average fire cause identification rate is 91.8%.
The fire cause identification rate of the Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters has been increasing every year, with 92.2% in 2017, 92.8% in 2018, and 92.8% in 2019.
The Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters has implemented various policies to drastically reduce the number of fires with unknown causes.
First, since 2013, it has steadily increased the number of experts such as master's and doctoral degree holders in engineering fields. From 2013 to last year, 162 experts were hired, and 50 more are planned to be hired this year. Additionally, various fire cause analysis research paper competitions have been held, and fire investigation personnel (in teams of two) have been reinforced. The Gyeonggi Fire Academy also operates a fire appraisal analysis team.
In particular, the Gyeonggi Fire Headquarters analyzed that the increase in firefighting personnel, one of Governor Lee Jae-myung’s representative pledges, has had a significant effect on the development of firefighting.
Kim Sung-gon, Head of Disaster Response Division at the Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters, emphasized, "Raising the fire investigation cause identification rate greatly helps residents affected by fires to return to their daily work promptly," adding, "We will continue steady efforts to continuously increase the identification rate of fires with unknown causes."
