KT, Third Preliminary Approval for International Standard of Quantum Cryptography Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] KT announced on the 28th that it participated online in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) 'Study Group 13' international meeting currently being held in Geneva, Switzerland, and received preliminary approval for the 'Control and Management Technology of Quantum Cryptography Communication Networks' as an international standard. This standard is KT's third quantum cryptography communication technology established as an ITU-T standard.
With this achievement, South Korea has become the country holding 3 out of the total 5 quantum cryptography communication standards approved by ITU-T Study Group 13. All the standards held by South Korea in Study Group 13 were proposed by KT. The preliminary approval of the ITU-T international standard means that experts attending the ITU-T meeting unanimously passed the proposal to establish the technology as an international standard. Subsequently, the technology undergoes a 'circulation' process among ITU-T member countries, and if there are no special objections, it is finally approved as an international standard.
The standard for control and management technology of quantum cryptography communication networks (Y.3804) mainly includes the functions and criteria for fault, configuration, charging, performance, and security management, which are essential for telecommunication operators to operate quantum cryptography communication networks. It also includes requirements to provide uninterrupted quantum cryptography communication services. By adopting this standard, telecommunication operators can respond immediately even if faults occur or hacking attacks are received on the quantum cryptography communication networks they operate. Additionally, they can continuously manage network quality to guarantee stable services to customers.

Since proposing this technology to ITU-T in July 2019 to have it recognized as a standard, KT has been collaborating with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). Lee Jong-sik, Head of KT Infrastructure Research Institute (Executive Director), said, “This standardization is significant in that South Korea has secured technological competitiveness in quantum cryptography networks to lead the market,” adding, “KT will continue to lead related industries and contribute to national capacity development through innovation in quantum cryptography communication technology.”
