[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The ‘Next-Generation Medical Device Support Center,’ which researches and develops advanced medical devices to assist the motor functions of the elderly and disabled, will be established in Dadae 1-dong, Saha-gu, Busan.

Busan City announced on the 27th that it will begin construction of the Next-Generation Medical Device Support Center aimed at developing medical devices that assist physical functions in preparation for a super-aged society.

The support center will be built on a site of 1,622㎡ with a total floor area of 3,894㎡, consisting of one basement floor and four above-ground floors. The detailed design service for construction was completed in March. This facility is being promoted as part of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s 2018 Regional Industry Hub Project and is scheduled for completion in November 2021.

It aims to support the development of considerate healthcare products for the elderly and disabled, enhance the reliability and brand value of domestic medical devices through domestic and overseas market entry, and pioneer the localization of medical devices and new smart healthcare markets.

Main facilities include a demonstration test room, certification testing room, usability evaluation room, joint production room, multipurpose room, basic physical fitness measurement room, and offices.

The center will carry out three main business areas supporting companies: prototype production using joint research equipment, translational research, technology support through open laboratories, product advancement and design support, overseas expansion, and intellectual property acquisition.

By developing mobility devices, daily living support devices, sensory support devices, and rehabilitation training devices integrated with information and communication technology (ICT), it is expected to contribute to regional economic revitalization through fostering small and strong enterprises and pioneering global markets, creating high added value.

Byun Sung-wan, Acting Mayor of Busan, said, “Once the support center is established, it will be integrated with the life care industry, one of Busan’s seven strategic industries, to accumulate medical device technology through research and development and commercialization support of medical devices and elderly-friendly products, securing market leadership and establishing a base infrastructure.”
