CJ CheilJedang, World's Only Eco-Friendly Producer of 9 Major Amino Acids... "Strengthening Super-Gap Position"
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] CJ CheilJedang is leading the global green bio market’s ‘eco-friendly’ trend by expanding its production items of feed amino acids through a unique fermentation method.
On the 27th, CJ CheilJedang announced that it has secured production technology capable of mass-producing ‘leucine,’ one of the essential amino acids, using an eco-friendly method, and will start production within the year. Leucine will become the ninth essential amino acid produced by CJ CheilJedang using an eco-friendly fermentation method. Currently, among global amino acid producers, CJ CheilJedang is the only company producing more than five types of essential amino acids using eco-friendly methods.
Amino acids are components that make up proteins and help promote animal growth and strengthen immunity. Among the total 21 types of amino acids, 11 are synthesized within the body through feed and other sources. However, the remaining 10 types (essential amino acids), including lysine and methionine, cannot be synthesized by animals themselves, and deficiency can cause growth problems, so they must be ingested separately.
Just as humans supplement vitamins that cannot be synthesized in the body through nutritional supplements or fruits, animals must absorb essential amino acids in the form of feed additives. Considering the cycle of ‘feed (+essential amino acids) → livestock → food → humans,’ the eco-friendly production of essential amino acids is very important.
CJ CheilJedang’s eco-friendly method integrates over 60 years of accumulated microbial fermentation research and development (R&D) capabilities and advanced technology. CJ CheilJedang produces amino acids using a fermentation method that utilizes differentiated microbes called Corynebacterium and grain raw materials. This eco-friendly fermentation method significantly reduces wastewater and exhaust gas generated during the amino acid production process and allows by-products from the manufacturing process to be used as fertilizers to regenerate the grain raw materials.
In the early amino acid industry, many global companies produced amino acid products by ‘chemically’ decomposing materials such as duck or pig hair, and even human hair. Even now, many companies produce amino acids using chemical methods or Escherichia coli, a type of harmful bacteria.
