Relocation of Greek Army Korean War Memorial by the Highway to Yeongwol Park
The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission Mediates Through On-Site Coordination Meeting Between Korea and Greece
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Greek military's Korean War memorial will be relocated from the Yeongdong Expressway Yeoju Rest Area to Yeongwol Park in Yeoju City, Gyeonggi Province, following an on-site mediation meeting and arbitration by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC).
The ACRC announced on the 24th that when the Greek military's memorial was erected in 1974, the surrounding area was a quiet hill, but with the construction of logistics warehouses, hydrogen gas charging stations, and smoking areas, concerns were raised that the honor due to the veterans was being diminished.
The Greek Korean War Veterans Association requested the cleanup of the environment around the memorial.
Accordingly, the ACRC conducted multiple on-site investigations and consultations with related agencies and prepared a final mediation plan to relocate the memorial to Yeongwol Park.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will move the memorial to Yeongwol Park by the end of next year, and Yeoju City in Gyeonggi Province will provide Yeongwol Park as the relocation site for the memorial.
The Ministry of National Defense will organize the existing memorial site after the relocation construction and support future memorial events related to the Greek military's participation.
The Embassy of Greece in Korea will support the transportation of materials such as marble needed for the relocation construction.
The ACRC held an on-site mediation meeting at Yeoju City Hall in Gyeonggi Province, chaired by Chairperson Jeon Hyun-hee, and conveyed these details through a video conference with the Greek veterans who filed the complaint.
The ACRC explained that this on-site mediation meeting was the first time since its establishment that a grievance complaint filed from abroad was resolved through on-site mediation.
According to the ACRC, the Greek veterans who filed the complaint expressed their feelings and gratitude regarding the relocation of the memorial via video conference.
Chairperson Jeon said, "I am pleased that through this mediation, the Greek military memorial will be relocated to Yeongwol Park, allowing citizens to continue the spirit of participation close to them. The ACRC will strive not only to handle complaints received but also to proactively prepare solutions."
Greece dispatched about 5,000 troops during the Korean War. Among them, approximately 200 were killed in action and about 600 were wounded.
The Greek military Korean War memorial was made in 1974 using marble directly brought from Greece by the Ministry of National Defense and was designated as a national memorial facility by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs in 2003.
