Andong-si, Citizen Sports Festival and Marathon Event 'Finally Canceled'
All Eight Nationwide Sports Competitions Postponed Until Next Year
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] Andong City in Gyeongbuk announced on the 24th that it has made a final decision to cancel nationwide sports events such as the Andong Citizens Sports Festival and the Andong Marathon, which had been postponed once each, to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The 60th Andong Citizens Sports Festival was scheduled to be held on September 19, but on the 21st, at a meeting attended by the Andong City Sports Council and the heads of the Eup, Myeon, and Dong Sports Councils, it was agreed to cancel the event considering the possibility of a large-scale outbreak in the fall.
The Andong Marathon (hosted by Maeil Shinmun) was also being prepared after being postponed from June to September 6, but was ultimately canceled due to the spread of COVID-19.
Currently, Andong City is promoting the hosting of city and provincial level competitions and outdoor events considering the characteristics of the events, while the basic policy is to cancel or temporarily postpone nationwide and indoor competitions.
This year’s canceled nationwide events include the Andong Hahoe Mask Invitational Jokgu Tournament, the Korea Sports Council President’s National Team Bowling Competition, the Andong Woongbu Middle and High School Lower Grade Soccer Festival, the Andong Hahoe Mask Cup International OPEN Bowling Tournament, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor’s Cup Recreational Bowling Tournament, and the Andong San-yak Cup Table Tennis Tournament.

An official from Andong City said, "Due to the nature of the events where many people gather, it is difficult to implement effective quarantine measures against COVID-19, so we decided to cancel for the safety of citizens and participants," adding, "Next year, we will do our best to prepare to hold the events normally to contribute to the development of sports and the revitalization of the local economy."
