KOSDAQ Hits a New High, Surpassing the 800 Mark for the First Time in 1 Year and 9 Months
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] On the 23rd, the KOSDAQ index surpassed the 800-point mark for the first time in 1 year and 9 months. Beyond recovering the losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the KOSDAQ index has been hitting new yearly highs day after day. After consolidating around the 750-point level throughout last month, the KOSDAQ has risen above 800 points again since October 2018. It is evaluated that abundant liquidity in the market is flowing into the KOSDAQ market’s bio and untact-related stocks, creating a relative strength.
According to the Korea Exchange on the 23rd, as of 2:35 PM, the KOSDAQ index recorded 802.19, up 0.91% from the previous trading day. During the session, it rose to 802.24, achieving a yearly high.
The KOSPI index fell 0.67% from the previous trading day to 2213.76, highlighting the relative strength of the KOSDAQ market. This is interpreted as a result of liquidity with nowhere to go due to ultra-low interest rates flowing in, and the concentration of COVID-19 beneficiary sectors such as pharmaceuticals, bio, gaming, and IT in the KOSDAQ market.
On this day, bio companies among the top market capitalization stocks in the KOSDAQ market saw significant gains.
Seegene, which rose to the second largest market capitalization with its COVID-19 diagnostic kits, saw its stock price surge again, trading at 215,900 KRW, up 15.39% from the previous day. Alteogen also recorded 179,800 KRW, up 16.45% from the previous trading day.
EcoPro BM, listed on the KOSDAQ market and related to secondary batteries, also showed strength following Tesla’s fourth consecutive quarter of profitability. While large secondary battery stocks listed on the KOSPI market such as LG Chem and Samsung SDI showed little volatility, EcoPro BM, ranked fifth in market capitalization on the KOSDAQ, traded at 145,300 KRW, up 5.21% from the previous day, hitting a 52-week high.
