Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Publishes Construction Companies and Clients Involved in Fatal Accidents in Q2
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] GS Construction was found to be the large construction company with the highest number of fatal accidents in the second quarter.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport disclosed on the 23rd the list of the top 100 construction companies by construction capability evaluation that experienced fatal accidents during the second quarter, as well as the ordering agencies with the most fatal accidents.
According to the Ministry, GS Construction had the highest number of fatal accidents among large construction companies in the second quarter, with 3 accidents resulting in 3 deaths. On April 6, a worker died due to the overturning of an excavator caused by negligence at the Saemangeum New Port access road and north breakwater construction site.
Two days later, on April 8, one person died due to rockfall at the advanced section of the tunnel during the Icheon-Osan Expressway private investment project construction, and on May 7, a worker who had not secured a safety harness died in a fall accident.
SK Construction ranked second, with two fatalities: one on April 21 at the Dongnae 3rd SK VIEW site due to the overturning of concrete pouring equipment, and another on June 20 at the Bujeon-Masan double-track railway private investment facility project site involving a diver.
Following them, Hyundai Construction, Daewoo Construction, Lotte Construction, Taeyoung Construction, Hanshin Engineering & Construction, and Jungheung Construction each had one worker die due to negligence or other causes. Among these, Hyundai Construction reported the highest cumulative number of construction site fatalities to the Ministry over the past year, totaling 7.
The ordering agency with the most fatalities during the second quarter was Busan Metropolitan City. On April 9, three workers died from suffocation during a sewer pipe installation project, and on June 23, one worker died due to negligence during the Busan Eco Delta City water supply intake construction, totaling 4 deaths.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport conducted special and surprise inspections on 179 construction sites of large construction companies where fatal accidents occurred from November last year to March this year as a proactive measure to prevent fatal accidents.
The inspection results revealed a total of 271 cases of improper practices. Penalty points will be imposed on six cases of improper construction practices, including insufficient quality testing, exposed rebar or material separation, and poor installation of temporary earth retaining structures.

Minister Kim Hyun-mi of the Ministry said, “We ask large construction companies to take the lead in making construction sites safe workplaces,” and added, “We will continuously conduct punitive on-site inspections targeting companies where fatal accidents have occurred to encourage the industry to proactively prevent safety accidents.”
