On the 22nd, the 'Yeongdeungpo-gu Lifelong Education Center for People with Developmental Disabilities' Opening Ceremony Held in Dangsan 1-dong... Total Area 612㎡, Basement 1 to 3 Floors with Classrooms and Sports Room
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chaehyunil) opened the ‘Lifelong Education Center for People with Developmental Disabilities’ on the 22nd in Dangsan 1-dong.
The opening ceremony was held with a minimal number of attendees to prevent COVID-19 infection. About 20 people, including Yeongdeungpo-gu Mayor Chaehyunil, city and district council members, officials from the (Corporation) Seoul Parents' Association for the Disabled who operate the center, and families of people with disabilities, gathered to celebrate the start of the center together.
The center, completed with a total area of 612㎡ and consisting of one basement floor and three above-ground floors, is equipped with various facilities for lifelong education of people with developmental disabilities, including classrooms, a psychological stabilization room, a sports room, and a multipurpose room.
The Lifelong Education Center for People with Developmental Disabilities, which began operations on the 1st of this month, provides educational programs for adults with developmental disabilities after school age.
Along with care services for people with developmental disabilities and their families, it serves as a lifelong education institution supporting the social independence of people with developmental disabilities who have few opportunities to learn after becoming adults.
The lifelong education curriculum is largely composed of mandatory education and elective education. Mandatory education includes communication, daily life training, social adaptation training, health management education, vocational transition education, and positive behavior support.
The elective education courses are filled with subjects recognized by the operating committee as needing supplementation, such as leisure, culture, and sports.
The total capacity of the center is 30 people; currently, 21 are using the facility, and additional recruitment is planned in the future. In the second half of the year, the Yeongdeungpo-gu Disabled Family Support Center will be established on the 4th floor of the same building, serving as a hub for support activities for people with disabilities and their families.
Additionally, the district plans to reorganize the existing Dream Plus Support Center, which operated for adults and school-age people with developmental disabilities, into the nation’s first care center for children with developmental disabilities, aiming to make it a representative model of welfare for people with developmental disabilities.
