Korail to Install Solar Power Facilities on Railway Station Platform Roofs
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) will lease idle spaces such as station buildings and platform roofs for solar power generation.
KORAIL announced on the 21st that it has selected 16 sites nationwide, including the Busan Railroad Vehicle Depot, as pilot project sites for solar power generation utilizing railroad infrastructure.
The selected sites include 8 locations such as the Busan Vehicle Maintenance Depot and 8 others including Mulgeum, Jinyeong, Taehwagang, and Gumi stations. Solar power facilities will be installed on rooftops of vehicle maintenance depots, platform roofs, and rooftop parking lots. The total area amounts to 161,829㎡.
For this project, KORAIL has completed the patent registration for the construction method to install solar power equipment on railroad station platforms and has finished the basic design service for the structures.
In March, KORAIL signed a business agreement with Korea Rail Network Authority for the "Development Project of Solar Power Generation Sites Utilizing Railroad Facilities," and plans to sign a detailed agreement within this month. Through this agreement, KORAIL will be responsible for the utilization plan, operation, and maintenance of the solar power project sites, while the Rail Network Authority will provide facilities and approve their use. Based on this, both organizations will cooperate to establish efficient utilization plans for railroad facilities in the future.
