South Africa's COVID-19 Cumulative Cases Reach 324,221... Jumps from 8th to 6th Place in One Day (Update)
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Juhee] South Africa has been confirmed to have the sixth highest number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in the world.
According to the real-time statistics site Worldometer on the 17th (local time), South Africa's cumulative number of COVID-19 cases reached 324,221, rising from 8th place on the previous day (16th) to 6th place worldwide, surpassing Chile (323,698 cases) and Mexico (324,041 cases).
However, South Africa's cumulative death toll was 4,669, which is lower than Chile (7,290) and Mexico (37,574).
On the 16th, South Africa recorded 13,172 new confirmed cases in one day, and the actual number of infected people excluding those who have recovered was estimated to be 153,961.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that as of the 15th, the total number of infections on the continent was 645,591, with 14,067 deaths.
