Seongdong-gu Elementary Care Center 'Aikkumnuriteo' Supports Online Classes for Elementary Students
After Class, Snack Time, and Play: Triple Benefits of After-School Care, Developing Summer Vacation Care Programs
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “My heart sinks when I receive a message from the teacher saying my child did not attend remote classes.”
For working parents with elementary school children attending in-person classes only once or twice a week and mostly online classes, worries are endless. Parents sigh deeply, concerned whether their child can attend online classes alone and properly complete assignments, making it hard to focus on work.
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is providing online class support services at the ‘Aikkumnuriter’ to fill the care gap for elementary school students caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
‘Aikkumnuriter’ is Seongdong-gu’s after-school elementary care center, operating a total of 13 locations. Since the early days of COVID-19, it has been offering emergency care for students whose families, such as working parents, find home care difficult. Since online schooling began last March, care teachers have been closely supporting online learning.
Park Su-jin (42) from Eungbong-dong, who has a third-grade child, said, “The thought of leaving my child, who does not attend school, alone at home to attend online classes was overwhelming,” adding, “Fortunately, sending my child to Aikkumnuriter’s emergency care has been a great help, as the care teachers attend online classes with the child and even help with assignments.”
A district official said, “A total of 5,995 people have used Aikkumnuriter, and the online class support has received tremendous positive feedback from parents,” adding, “Above all, we consider creating a safe care environment most important, and we are thoroughly preventing infections by disinfecting facilities, conducting professional quarantine, managing external visitors, and using hygiene partitions when providing meals and snacks.”
Even during emergency care, Aikkumnuriter operated the ‘Overcome COVID-19 Together’ project, which included activities such as ‘Sending Thank You Letters’ to medical staff and volunteers at COVID-19 screening clinics and ‘Making Personalized Mask Necklaces.’
Starting in August, during the summer vacation period, to address COVID-19-related psychological blues, specialized cultural and artistic programs such as horticulture and children’s theater will be operated in connection with community education institutions, and non-face-to-face care programs like online play activity classes will be developed and distributed.
