'Mapo Naru Saeujeot Festival' Wins Gold at Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards
Entertainment Event Innovation: 'Maponaru Saeujeot Festival' Wins Gold... Government Event Innovation: 'Yanghwajin Modern History Boat Route Exploration' Wins Silver
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) has been honored with a Gold Award and a Silver Award in two categories at the Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards for its representative projects, the Mapo-naru Salted Shrimp Festival and the Yanghwajin Modern History Boat Tour.
The Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards is an international awards ceremony that has been recognizing innovative achievements presented throughout the year by companies and organizations from 29 countries in the Asia-Pacific region since 2013.
This year marks the 8th Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards, with over 1,200 projects submitted from about 20 countries. After evaluation by more than 100 judges recruited worldwide, the winners in each category were finalized on the 13th.
Among them, Mapo-gu won awards in two categories: ▲ Gold Award in the Live Event category for Entertainment Event Innovation with the Mapo-naru Salted Shrimp Festival, and ▲ Silver Award in the Live Event category for Government Event Innovation with the Yanghwajin Modern History Boat Tour program.
The Mapo-naru Salted Shrimp Festival, which won the Gold Award in the Entertainment Event Innovation category, is an event that recreates the old Mapo-naru, where specialty products such as salted shrimp and salt from eight provinces across the country used to gather. It is a representative cultural tourism festival in Seoul that attracts tens of thousands of citizens every autumn.
The festival features various cultural performances and programs such as the Mapo-naru Sato Procession, the reenactment of the arrival of the yellow sailboats, and the Mapo-naru marketplace. The salted shrimp market, where high-quality salted shrimp from across the country are bought and sold, vividly recreates the lively atmosphere of the old Mapo-naru.
The Yanghwajin Modern History Boat Tour, which won the Silver Award in the Government Event Innovation category, is Seoul’s only historical and cultural tourism course along the Han River, created by Mapo-gu in 2015 to share the history of Yanghwa-naru with citizens.
The tour includes visits to the Foreign Missionaries’ Cemetery at Yanghwa-naru and the Jamdubong Historic Site (Historic Site No. 399), and a cruise along the old waterway to Seonyudo Island. Since 2015, it has become a beloved historical and cultural tourism course, consistently attracting full attendance from citizens.
Both the Mapo-naru Salted Shrimp Festival and the Yanghwajin Modern History Boat Tour received high marks for their historical significance, usefulness, participation, and innovation.

The 8th Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held online on September 22.
Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “Through winning the Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards, the excellence of Mapo-gu’s representative projects has been recognized globally. We will continue to develop content where history and culture coexist to maintain our reputation as a global tourism city.”
