The 'evaporative cooling device' sprays tiny water droplets like mist into the air to lower the ambient temperature by about 3 to 4℃, relieving the heat. It also reduces fine dust, deodorizes, and suppresses pests.
The direction and timing of the spray can be adjusted, and since the mist spray does not damage displayed products, it is gaining attention as a temperature control device suitable for traditional markets.
This facility was confirmed for introduction after being selected in 2017 by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' 'Traditional Market Revitalization Support Contest.' After securing funds and other processes, a total of 130 units were installed over a 600m section within Majang Livestock Market by December last year. It began full operation in July to welcome the summer.
Given the characteristics of the livestock market, where merchants and visitors suffered greatly from summer odors and heat, this installation is expected to contribute to revitalizing the traditional market by creating a pleasant market environment.
A district official said, "The evaporative cooling devices installed along the arcade-style roof inside the market will compensate for the market's disadvantage of being directly exposed to the summer heat and help enhance the competitiveness of traditional markets. Additionally, equipped with LED lighting usable year-round, it can produce various colors, improving the market's scenery and visual promotion."
Park Jaehong, president of the Majang Livestock Market Merchants Association, expressed expectations, saying, "In summer, the perceived temperature inside the market approached 40℃, making it suffocatingly difficult, but with this installation, it has become much cooler and the air quality has improved. Merchants are highly satisfied, and the number of market users is expected to increase."

Jeong Wono, mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "Creating a pleasant environment is a prerequisite for revitalizing traditional markets due to their characteristics. We will continue to cooperate with market merchants to make a comfortable, convenient, and desirable traditional market."
