[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] LG Electronics gathered global experts in one place to explore future technologies and new business opportunities.
On the 14th, LG Electronics announced the launch of the 'Innovation Council,' a platform for exchanging ideas with global experts to drive research and development (R&D) innovation based on digital transformation. The company plans to prepare for the rapidly changing market environment from an open innovation perspective.
Park Il-pyung, LG Electronics' Chief Technology Officer (CTO), serves as the chair of the council, which includes 12 experts from various fields such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud, robotics, and mobility.
The council members include Rodney Brooks, a world-renowned authority in robotics and CTO of the intelligent robotics startup Robust.AI; Sri Shivananda, CTO of the global payment service company PayPal; Adrian Cockcroft, Vice President in charge of cloud architecture strategy at cloud service provider Amazon Web Services; Kip Compton, Vice President of Cloud Platform and Solutions Group at network solutions company Cisco; and Jeff Pozy, CEO of high-fidelity audio specialist McIntosh Group.
LG Electronics held its first Innovation Council meeting on the same day, sharing opinions on future technology trends and industry developments with the members. Considering the difficulties in international travel due to the spread of COVID-19, the meeting was conducted via a non-face-to-face online video conference.
The meeting was also attended by Andrew Ng, a global authority in artificial intelligence, and Professor Cha Sang-kyun, Dean of the Graduate School of Data Science at Seoul National University.
At this first council meeting, Park shared LG Electronics' digital transformation vision to expand its business portfolio beyond manufacturing into new services and solutions based on differentiated software technologies such as artificial intelligence.
Under the theme "Changes in Various Industries in the Post-COVID-19 Era," invited speaker Professor Cha Sang-kyun from Seoul National University and experts in mobility and robotics each presented, followed by a free discussion among council members.
The members shared successful cases of flexible responses through digital transformation amid the global economic downturn caused by COVID-19. They also discussed future technologies and new businesses such as home IoT, robotics, and mobility that reflect customers' changed lifestyles in the new normal era.
