[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) and LG Electronics have joined hands for mutual growth. They have decided to accelerate cooperation for future technology development and talent cultivation.
On the 9th at 2 p.m., UNIST and LG Electronics held a 'Industry-Academia Cooperation Agreement Signing Ceremony' at LG Electronics Changwon Plant 1 R&D Center. Attendees toured the R&D Center together and discussed future industry-academia cooperation plans.
The two institutions previously signed a business agreement in 2015 to nurture customized science and engineering talents. Accordingly, over the past five years, outstanding talents have pursued their studies with LG Electronics' support and have joined LG Electronics.
This new agreement is an extension of the existing one, with both institutions agreeing to expand cooperation areas such as promising talent development, joint research, and discovery of industry-academia projects.
The new agreement includes forming an 'Industry-Academia Cooperation Committee' in addition to the existing 'UNIST LG Track' industry-academia scholarship program, aiming to discover joint projects and activate collaborative research. Accordingly, five detailed groups will be formed to engage in regular research cooperation.
Kwon Soon-yong, Director of UNIST Industry-Academia Cooperation Group, stated, “We plan to conduct collaborative research with LG Electronics based on excellent research capabilities in various fields such as mechanical engineering, artificial intelligence, power electronics, ergonomics, and design. We expect that by combining the strengths of both institutions, we can produce world-class results.”
Additionally, a program will be established to allow LG Electronics employees to complete master's and doctoral courses at UNIST. Selected employees from LG Electronics will be able to take advantage of UNIST's excellent curriculum, including the recently planned UNIST AI Graduate School.
Lee Yong-hoon, President of UNIST, said, “We are pleased to establish a cooperative relationship with a global company and university for the common goal of discovering future growth engines. We hope to lead the world with innovative research and guide industrial change and the future through continuous technology exchange and industry-academia cooperation.”
Song Dae-hyun, Head of LG Electronics H&A Business Division, said, “We hope this agreement between LG Electronics and UNIST will serve as an opportunity to strengthen a future-oriented industry-academia cooperation system between local universities and companies. We look forward to synergy effects between companies and universities through mutual exchanges in various fields.”
