Samyoung ENC Begins Development of Domestic Digital Radar
Participation in the Development Project of Shipborne Radar Device Incorporating Active Autonomous Evasion Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] Efforts are underway to localize ship radar equipment, which was previously imported entirely from abroad.
Samyoung ENC announced on the 9th that it attended the kickoff meeting for the project "Development of High-Power Digital Radar Equipment for Ships Incorporating Active Autonomous Avoidance Technology," held on the 8th at the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering in Yeongdo-gu, Busan.
Radar is the most fundamental system for safe navigation and autonomous operation, and currently relies on imported products, including those from Japan. Localizing radar, which is the biggest obstacle to domestic production of the Integrated Navigation Support System (INS), is expected to replace imports and increase exports.
The kickoff meeting for the radar equipment development project, which is also a national project for core industrial technology development by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy this year, was attended by related parties including ship electronic equipment company Samyoung ENC, San Engineering Co., Marine Electronics Trading Company, Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute, and Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering.
A total project cost of approximately 6 billion KRW will be invested. The national technology development project will involve about 50 researchers over 36 months. The project will simultaneously develop radar antennas, signal processing units using magnetron/SSPA methods, and radar displays (MFD) for both merchant ships and fishing vessels.

In addition to on-site verification facilities for the latest radar and sea trials using demonstration vessels, the project will also pursue final classification certification to commercialize and produce market-ready products. The three companies participating in the consortium signed a "Three-Party Joint Development Business Agreement" just before the kickoff meeting, expressing their intention to collaborate throughout the entire future product commercialization process.
