Bob Menendez, a Democratic U.S. Senator from New Jersey, stated on his Twitter on the 7th (local time), "The U.S. government has reported to Congress that it has notified the WHO of its withdrawal."
CNN reported that a State Department official acknowledged that the U.S. sent a three-sentence letter to the UN Secretary-General expressing its intention to withdraw from the WHO.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric also mentioned that the U.S. notified UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres of its withdrawal from the WHO effective July 6, 2021.
According to a joint resolution passed by the U.S. Congress in 1948, the United States must observe a one-year waiting period before withdrawing from UN-related agencies and must pay all financial obligations scheduled prior to withdrawal.
