Muju-gun Opens Era of 10 Million Tourists
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Go Dallyoung] Muju-gun, Jeonbuk, announced an ambitious plan on the 3rd to open the "10 million tourists era" by turning the Deogyusan National Park, Muju Gucheondong 33 Scenic Spots, the Firefly Festival where fireflies can be seen, and the Jeoksang Fortress area into tourist attractions.
Muju-gun aims to develop latent tourism resources to secure future food sources and revitalize the local economy by re-recognizing the historical value of Muju Jeoksang Fortress and establishing a comprehensive maintenance plan to systematically preserve and utilize the remaining relics.
Accordingly, on the 30th of last month, Muju-gun held a kickoff report meeting for the Jeoksang Fortress comprehensive maintenance plan service in the large conference room of Muju-gun Office, attended by Muju County Governor Hwang Inhong, advisory committee members, and researchers from Jeonbuk National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, officially starting the comprehensive maintenance project.
According to the county, with a service cost of 300 million KRW (210 million KRW from national funds), the comprehensive maintenance project for Jeoksang Fortress will be promoted based on the service results by January 2021. The basic concept of the Muju Jeoksang Fortress comprehensive maintenance plan includes establishing measures for the preservation and management of the relics.
They also plan to hold academic conferences to establish systematic comprehensive maintenance measures and to develop linkage plans with Anguksa Temple and Muju Jeoksang Fortress Archive.
In particular, they announced plans to investigate the fortress construction methods, accurately measure the length and area of remaining and lost sections using GPS, analyze the current status of the fortress through actual measurements and 3D scanning, and then create plans, elevations, and cross-sectional drawings.
Surrounding the fortress are historical and cultural heritage sites such as the Annals Archive and Anguksa Temple, along with abundant tourism resources including the outstanding scenery of Jeoksang Mountain itself, Jeoksang Lake, and the Meru Wine Cave.
In the future, the county expects that systematically preserving and utilizing the relics will not only serve as an educational site for mountain history but also greatly contribute to income generation for Muju residents by turning the area into a tourist attraction.
