LG Electronics and the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement signed a business agreement yesterday at the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement located in Buk-gu, Daegu.
Under this agreement, both parties plan to mutually cooperate on ▲technology development to ensure safety ▲establishment of environments for safety verification ▲development of safety evaluation methods related to mobile manipulators.
The mobile manipulator combines a vertically articulated robot that performs movements similar to a human arm with an Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR). It autonomously moves within factory production lines to carry out various processes such as parts transportation, product assembly, and inspection. It is an essential element to secure productivity and quality in smart factories.
Both parties expect this agreement to lay the foundation for the safe use of mobile manipulators in industrial sites and contribute to the activation of smart factories.
Wo Joong-woon, head of the Certification and Evaluation Division at the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement, stated, “As robot demand surges in industrial sites due to COVID-19, technology cooperation with LG Electronics, a leading domestic robot company, to ensure safety is expected to promote the distribution and expansion of safer products in industrial sites.”
Lee Seung-gi, head of the Advanced Production Technology Research Institute at LG Electronics’ Production Technology Center, said, “We will actively collaborate with the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement to establish safety standards for domestic industrial mobile manipulators and strengthen manufacturing competitiveness.”
Meanwhile, LG Electronics stated that it is expanding its robot business by developing various robots ranging from home use to industrial use and continuously exploring new business opportunities to provide better lives to customers.
Accordingly, in 2018, LG Electronics acquired the industrial robot manufacturer ‘Robostar’ and established a ‘Robot Business Center’ directly under the CEO to strengthen business capabilities by developing robot products and services.
