Dongjak-gu Operates 'Senior Home Exercise Class' to Overcome COVID-19
Operating Twice-Weekly Online Classes for Seniors Until COVID-19 Situation Stabilizes... Customized Exercises for Seniors Including Shoulder and Hip Stretching, Upper and Lower Body Strength Training, and Balance Exercises
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Changwoo Lee) is operating an online exercise video called ‘Elders’ Home Exercise Class’ that seniors in the area can easily follow at home until the COVID-19 situation stabilizes.
This exercise class was prepared to address decreased physical activity among seniors due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to prevent muscle weakness and alleviate emotional isolation.
The program features a sports specialist instructor demonstrating essential movements for seniors using everyday items or small equipment, including ▲shoulder joint and hip joint stretching ▲upper and lower body strength exercises ▲balance training in various postures.
The video lessons are provided twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday, and can be accessed through the Dongjak-gu Facilities Management Corporation website or blog.
Once the COVID-19 situation stabilizes, the program plans to expand operations to senior centers, welfare centers, and community service centers.
Additionally, the district is implementing a ‘Comprehensive Heatwave Protection Plan for Seniors’ until September 30 to prevent heat-related illnesses among seniors vulnerable to heatwaves.
Through the operation of ‘Disaster Helpers’ consisting of 130 personnel including public officials, customized senior care workers, and social workers, the district is protecting the safety and health of seniors in vulnerable living conditions and strengthening welfare checks for about 1,100 recipients of customized senior care services.
Moreover, a total of 166 locations, including 137 general rest shelters such as senior centers and public facilities and 29 extended rest shelters, have been designated as ‘Senior Heatwave Shelters’ and will be flexibly operated according to the COVID-19 crisis alert level.
Currently, all heatwave shelters are closed due to the severe alert level, and at the caution level, general shelters mainly in government offices such as community service centers and the district office will be operated under constant disinfection management.
