According to U.S. media including The New York Times, President Trump retweeted a video featuring his supporters around 8 a.m. on Sunday the 28th (local time) and wrote, "Thanks to the great residents of The Villages."
The controversy arose because a white man in the video shouted "White Power!" twice. In the context of growing social demands to end racial discrimination following the death of George Floyd, this scene could be interpreted as President Trump siding with white supremacy.
In response, Tim Scott, the only Black Republican senator, appeared on CNN and said, "President Trump should not have retweeted that video. He needs to take it down."
As the controversy escalated, President Trump deleted the retweeted video around 11 a.m. Judd Deere, White House Deputy Press Secretary, explained, "President Trump is an enthusiastic fan of The Villages and did not hear that one phrase in the video."
Previously, President Trump had posted manipulated videos on Twitter with phrases glorifying violence, receiving three 'warning labels' and even having content hidden, but this time he responded quickly by deleting the post, showing a contrast.
