Han "Support for Sudan's Democratization and Economic Reform"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 25th, Lee Tae-ho, the 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the Sudan Partnership Conference held via video conference and stated that the Korean government supports the democratization and economic reforms of the Sudanese transitional government and will continuously support Sudan's development through humanitarian aid and development cooperation.
The conference, jointly hosted by Germany, the United Nations, the EU, and Sudan, was held to consolidate the international community's solidarity in supporting Sudan's political and economic reform efforts.
More than 50 ministerial-level officials from countries and international organizations attended the meeting, including Hamdok, Prime Minister of Sudan; Ant?nio Guterres, UN Secretary-General; Abiy, Prime Minister of Ethiopia; and Maas, German Foreign Minister.
Vice Minister Lee said, "Korea is a country that has achieved democratization and economic development simultaneously in a short period, and we empathize with the political and economic aspirations of the Sudanese people. We will support the Sudanese transitional government’s efforts to establish a stable political system and reform the economic structure by utilizing Korea’s experience."
Additionally, Vice Minister Lee expressed the Korean government's intention to provide support worth a total of 7.5 million USD this year to assist Sudan's response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and its socio-economic development.
He also introduced that Korea has been contributing to Sudan's sustainable development by implementing development cooperation projects in various fields such as agriculture and vocational training, focusing on Sudan's potential with vast arable land, young labor force, and abundant natural resources.
The participants agreed to issue a joint declaration containing international support for Sudan's political and economic reform efforts, support for Sudan's COVID-19 response, and financial contributions for Sudan's economic reforms.
Our government has externally supported Sudan's democratization efforts based on the spirit of peace and democracy protection and announced more specific support measures for Sudan, including humanitarian aid and development cooperation projects, to the international community at this conference.

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "We will continue to monitor possible changes in the situation in Sudan, maintain protection activities for overseas nationals, and participate in the international community's cooperative efforts to realize Sudan's democratization and economic potential."
