Jeonnam Police Conduct Intensive Crackdown on Seatbelt Non-Use During Summer Vacation Season
Enforcement of Seat Belt Non-Compliance on All Seats Until August 31 to Minimize Traffic Accident Damage
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] As the peak vacation season begins, the number of travelers and vehicle traffic is increasing, and traffic accidents are also expected to rise accordingly.
The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 25th that from June 24 to August 31, they will conduct intensive crackdowns on drivers and passengers to encourage the use of seat belts in all seats, which reduces the risk of injury in the event of a traffic accident.
The police foresee that since the spread of COVID-19, with a focus on non-contact and mechanical enforcement, the safety awareness of vehicle users has declined.
Also, fatalities from traffic accidents tend to concentrate during the summer vacation season when outdoor activities become more active, so they are strengthening enforcement to prevent casualties from traffic accidents.
This intensive crackdown will be conducted on all vehicles at locations with frequent traffic accidents, and seat belt enforcement will be combined with drunk driving crackdowns.
In particular, every Tuesday and Friday are designated as ‘Traffic Safety Days,’ during which all police forces will be deployed for intensive enforcement, along with publicity and guidance to increase the seat belt wearing rate among vehicle occupants.
A Jeonnam Police Agency official emphasized, “Wearing a seat belt when a traffic accident occurs can reduce the fatality rate by up to five times. Remember that the seat belt is a ‘life belt’ that protects your life and your family’s life, and it is very important to develop the habit of wearing a seat belt regularly.”
