The Expressway Corporation announced on the 25th that it has created 518 flower beds since 2018 and plans to complete a total of 530 flower beds by adding 12 more locations by the end of this year. Through this project, the total area of flower beds created along highways nationwide will reach 500,000㎡, which is equivalent to about 70 soccer fields (7,140㎡ each).
The Expressway Corporation initiated this project considering the characteristics of highways where drivers may feel bored or experience decreased attention due to the presence of colorless facilities such as soundproof walls and guardrails.
The Corporation mainly creates flower beds in sections with heavy traffic and high visibility to customers, planting a variety of wildflowers with different blooming periods to allow people to feel the changes of the seasons. In spring and summer, cornflowers, poppies, and zinnias bloom, while in autumn, cosmos and sunflowers bloom, offering a diverse seasonal atmosphere.

Kim Dong-in, Director of Facilities at the Expressway Corporation, said, "Due to the impact of COVID-19, most flower festivals have been canceled, but we hope people can take a moment to heal by enjoying the wildflowers blooming along the highways. We will continue to strive to create environmentally friendly highways."
