US COVID-19 New Infections Reach Record High... New York Imposes Self-Quarantine for Travelers from Infection Hotspots
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The resurgence of COVID-19 infections in the United States shows no signs of stopping.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University on the 24th (local time), the number of new COVID-19 cases reported in the U.S. the previous day reached 34,700. This is the second highest level following the peak of 36,400 cases on April 24. If additional cases are confirmed on this day, a new record may be set. As of now, the cumulative number of infections in the U.S. has reached 2,364,864.
California reported over 6,000 new cases on the 22nd, followed by 7,149 new infections on the 23rd. The number of cases increased by 69% over two days. California’s cumulative infections have risen to around 191,000, bringing it close to surpassing 200,000. So far, New York is the only state in the U.S. with more than 200,000 confirmed cases.
Florida also announced 5,508 new cases on the 23rd, raising further concerns. The number surged from the 3,000 range on the 22nd to over 5,000 in just one day. Florida’s cumulative infections have reached 109,000.
Texas confirmed 5,100 new cases on the 23rd, pushing its cumulative infections beyond 120,000.
According to CNBC, which analyzed data from Johns Hopkins University, the 7-day average of new COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has increased by more than 30% compared to the previous week.
As COVID-19 spreads rapidly in some parts of the U.S., New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut?states that recently succeeded in controlling infections?have announced a 14-day self-quarantine requirement for travelers coming from states with ongoing outbreaks.

The affected states are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Washington, Texas, and Utah, and the measure will take effect from the 25th.
