Gangdong-gu Collaborates with Village Teachers to Fill Elementary Care Gaps
Support for Village Teachers in Elementary School Care Classrooms... Reducing Burden on Parents and Schools... Assistance with Remote Learning, Health Management Including Fever Checks, and Support for Disinfection and Quarantine Activities
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) announced that it plans to support village teachers in local elementary schools as the number of students using after-school care classrooms continues to increase due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
In Gangdong-gu, 106 after-school care classrooms are operated across 26 elementary schools.
There are 91 dedicated care teachers (26 full-time, 65 part-time), and 2,075 students use the service.
However, recently, due to the impact of COVID-19 making in-person classes difficult, the number of students wanting to use after-school care classrooms has significantly increased. Additionally, dividing classrooms to maintain social distancing among students has caused difficulties in managing care teacher staffing.
Accordingly, the district plans to support 35 village teachers and a total of 54 million KRW in personnel expenses to meet the rapidly increasing care demand and supplement the shortage of teachers in elementary schools.
The village teachers participating in the after-school care classrooms are those trained through the Gangdong Innovation Education District Project. They support children's village experience activities through various programs such as participation in the middle school free semester system, operation of the Gangdong Village Exploration Program, and hosting playground festivals, serving as a bridge connecting school sites and the local community.
From July to December, for two months, village teachers will assist in after-school care classroom operations by providing learning support such as remote learning assistance, health management including temperature checks, meal guidance, and disinfection and quarantine activities, minimizing care gaps caused by COVID-19 and other factors.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “As COVID-19 prolongs, the care gap for children is becoming a social issue. Therefore, our district intends to support village teachers to resolve parents' care difficulties and schools' staffing shortages. Since these teachers are discovered and trained locally and actively operate as a village education community, I believe they will be a great help to parents, schools, and students.”
