The signing ceremony was held with the attendance of key officials including Cho Won-hyun, Director of the Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency, Lee Jeong-rim, Head of the Donation Management Headquarters, Kim Dae-seong, Director of Yangsan Pusan National University Hospital, and Ryu Je-ho, Director of the Organ Transplant Center.
Through the agreement, they promised ▲ active identification of suspected brain death cases and establishment of a rapid communication system ▲ prompt brain death determination and efficient management without transporting brain-dead organ donors ▲ guarantee of obtaining medical information for donation and cooperation in medical administrative support ▲ active cooperation if transportation of suspected brain death cases is necessary.
Yangsan Pusan National University Hospital, which opened in 2008, has firmly established itself as a specialized organ transplant hospital through proactive management and is also very active in fostering a donation culture by establishing a tissue bank.
In 2019, a total of 8 brain-dead organ donations were conducted, and in the case of brain-dead organ transplants, the numbers jumped from 72 cases in 2017 and 84 cases in 2018 to 123 cases last year, achieving a remarkable 46% increase compared to the previous year.
In particular, among the 123 brain-dead organ transplants last year, lung transplants accounted for 37 cases, making up 30% of all organs.
Moreover, the hospital has established itself as the only multi-organ transplant hospital outside the metropolitan area by performing 22 heart transplants, 25 brain-dead liver transplants, 20 brain-dead kidney transplants, and 14 pancreas transplants.
