'Nolto' Controversy Over Japanese-Style Costumes Spreads... Production Team "Stops Rebroadcast and Replay"
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] 'Amazing Saturday' has been embroiled in a controversy over Japanese-influenced (Waeseok) costumes. Waeseok refers to things that bear Japanese culture or lifestyle elements.
On the 22nd, a post strongly criticizing the costumes worn by the cast in the episode aired on the 20th was uploaded on the viewer board of tvN's 'Amazing Saturday' (Nolto).
The writer began, "I would like to inquire about the costume worn by child actor Kim Kang-hoon, who appeared as a guest," and added, "The phrase printed on the chest of the costume is inappropriate."
They continued, "The phrase on the chest of Kim Kang-hoon's costume reads ‘大一大万大吉’ (Daeil Daeman Daegil). This is the 'kamon' (family crest) used by Ishida Mitsunari, a historical figure from 16th-century Japan. Ishida Mitsunari participated in the Imjin War and invaded Joseon."
In particular, the viewer pointed out that the armor worn by Kim Shin in 'Goblin' did not have this phrase, questioning why the costume with this phrase had to be worn.
In response, the 'Amazing Saturday' production team stated, "We apologize for not recognizing the historical significance. We sincerely thank those who informed us of this fact," and added, "The costume was obtained from a rental company that the production team usually deals with, and neither the cast member Kim Kang-hoon, the production team, nor the rental company were aware of this."
They further explained, "The recording proceeded without suspicion on site, and the broadcast was aired. We confirmed the report this evening and will leave a comment after taking necessary measures."
The production team announced measures including suspending the rebroadcast and on-demand service of the episode, informing the rental company about the costume, apologizing to Kim Kang-hoon, and sharing the situation via comments. The on-demand viewing of the episode will resume next week after mosaic (blur) editing.
