Gyeonggi-do Seizes 73.5 Billion KRW in Deposit from 3,450 Delinquents
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province seized court deposit funds worth 73.5 billion KRW from 3,450 local tax delinquents and collected 1.4 billion KRW through enforcement and other means.
In December last year, the province requested the Court Administration Office to provide deposit data for 379,963 local tax delinquents who owed 300,000 KRW or more. After securing the deposit data, the province proceeded to collectively seize 73.5 billion KRW in deposits from 3,450 delinquents based on this information.
During this process, the province collected 400 million KRW from 288 individuals through court enforcement and an additional 1 billion KRW from 264 individuals through voluntary payment after seizure notifications.
Court deposits refer to money or securities entrusted to the court by parties involved in lawsuits over creditor-debtor disputes or real estate auction executions for purposes such as debt repayment, collateral, or safekeeping.
For this reason, enforcement is mainly carried out against delinquents whose whereabouts are unknown or whose assets subject to seizure cannot be found.

Lee Ui-hwan, Director of the Tax Justice Division of the province, stated, "Through the process of seizing court deposits, it was revealed that a significant number of delinquents intentionally avoided paying taxes by voluntarily settling their tax debts." He emphasized, "Going forward, we will realize tax justice through strong measures such as deposit inquiries, home searches, and forced auctions."
