Panmunjom Declaration Ratification Helps Inter-Korean Relations, 'Disagree' 51.6% vs 'Agree' 39.2%
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] A public opinion survey revealed that nearly half of the population perceives that the ratification of the Panmunjom Declaration by the National Assembly would not help improve inter-Korean relations.
Realmeter, commissioned by tbs, announced on the 18th that in a survey conducted on the 17th regarding the agreement that ratification of the Panmunjom Declaration by the National Assembly would help improve inter-Korean relations, 51.6% responded 'disagree,' while 39.2% responded 'agree.' 'Don't know' accounted for 9.2%.
By age group, 'disagree' responses were higher among those aged 70 and above (disagree 67.6% vs agree 32.4%), as well as in their 20s (52.0% vs 33.6%) and 30s (48.9% vs 38.0%). Conversely, in the 50s (51.1% vs 44.5%), 60s (47.5% vs 41.6%), and 40s (46.6% vs 42.6%), agreement and disagreement were nearly evenly split.
By region, 'disagree' responses were highest in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong at 58.5%, and also exceeded 50% in Seoul, Gyeonggi-Incheon, and Gwangju-Jeolla. In Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and Daegu-Gyeongbuk, agreement and disagreement were about equal.
By ideological inclination, 'disagree' responses were predominant among conservatives (disagree 71.2% vs agree 25.3%) and moderates (60.3% vs 33.3%), whereas progressives showed a higher rate of 'agree' responses at 66.8%, above the overall average. By party support, 'disagree' responses were highest among supporters of the United Future Party at 85.6%, followed by the People’s Party supporters (79.4% vs 13.9%) and non-affiliated voters (63.6% vs 18.6%). Conversely, 70.5% of Democratic Party supporters responded that they agree, showing a contrasting result.

The survey contacted 9,345 adults nationwide aged 18 and over, with a final 500 respondents completing the survey, resulting in a 5.4% response rate. The sampling error is ±4.4 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
