Naver Labs and Seoul City Create 'Detailed 3D Map'
[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] Naver Labs announced on the 18th that it has created a 3D model of the entire Seoul metropolitan area. Starting in July, the updated three-dimensional map will also be made available to the general public.
This 3D modeling has a level of precision that allows autonomous vehicles and robots to actually move within the urban environment.
Naver Labs explained, "It is significant in that it is an example of advancing a technology-based future vision."
To create the 3D model of the entire Seoul area, Naver Labs combined artificial intelligence (AI) technology with aerial photo processing technology. This technology reconstructs large-scale 2D images taken from different sky locations into precise 3D models without parallax differences.
The 3D modeling covers the entire Seoul area, which spans 605㎢, and includes 600,000 buildings within the region. The number of aerial photos taken amounts to approximately 25,000. The processing of this vast amount of data was mostly automated using Naver Labs' proprietary technology.
Using this data, Naver Labs plans to enhance HD maps for delivery robot vehicles on roads and further develop mapping technology to produce more economical and accurate maps in the future. Additionally, the data will be used for research to improve the positional accuracy of Visual Localization & Visual Mapping technologies.
Based on the data provided by Naver Labs, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has built the Virtual Seoul platform, a 3D-based digital twin environment, which is utilized for urban planning reviews, urban wind path simulations, and management of IoT sensor fire safety facilities.
