United Future Party Advances Foreign and Security Special Committee Meeting by One Day... "Considering the Seriousness of the Issue" (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy reporters Lee Ji-eun and Lim Chun-han] On the 16th, the United Future Party stated regarding North Korea's demolition of the Kaesong Inter-Korean Joint Liaison Office, "Our consistent position is that we will cooperate across party lines only when a properly constituted floor leadership is in place, not a wrongly formed one," adding, "Before that, we will hold an emergency meeting within our party to conduct a thorough analysis and present a definite alternative." The Foreign Affairs and Security Special Committee meeting, originally scheduled for the 17th, was also moved up by one day.
Kim Seong-won, the United Future Party's senior deputy floor leader, told reporters after an emergency meeting of senior lawmakers held at the National Assembly that day, "The senior lawmakers said that the Moon Jae-in administration's misguided conciliatory policy toward North Korea has failed and demanded an immediate halt to North Korea's provocative acts," adding, "They said the party's Foreign Affairs and Security Special Committee will be immediately activated to conduct a thorough analysis of the situation and propose alternatives."
Kim also said, "Originally, lawmakers with three or more terms were gathering to discuss party issues when the North Korean liaison office was blown up, and discussions on that began," adding, "Lawmaker Park Jin will take the lead, and defense and foreign affairs experts will urgently contact each other and plan to meet for discussions."
Regarding the return of floor leader Joo Ho-young, Kim said, "Many senior lawmakers expressed the opinion that it is appropriate for Floor Leader Joo to resume his role in the party."
United Future Party spokesperson Kim Eun-hye added in a further announcement, "Considering the urgency of the matter related to the Inter-Korean Joint Liaison Office, the first meeting originally scheduled for tomorrow will be held shortly after being moved up," stating, "Under the recognition of an urgent and serious situation in inter-Korean relations, Chairman Park Jin, along with party lawmakers and experts, will analyze North Korea's intentions and the impact on the Korean Peninsula situation and propose alternatives."
