[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] A man in his 20s was sentenced to 25 years in prison for strangling and killing his ex-girlfriend during an argument over their breakup and disposing of her body.
The 15th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court (Presiding Judge Pyo Geukchang) sentenced A (28, male), who was charged with murder and corpse disposal, to 25 years in prison and ordered him to wear an electronic monitoring device (electronic anklet) for 10 years at the first trial held on the 16th.
Additionally, B (25), A’s current girlfriend who was also charged with participating in the disposal of the body (corpse disposal), was sentenced to 2 years in prison.
The court stated regarding A, "Murder is a crime that infringes upon the precious value of human life," and added, "The defendant must be severely punished accordingly."
It continued, "The defendant committed various crimes since adolescence, and this crime was committed during the probation period of another offense," and "Considering the risk of reoffending with a murder crime, the court orders the attachment of the electronic monitoring device."
Regarding B, the court explained the sentencing by saying, "Although B knew that A had killed the victim, she did not encourage surrender and actively participated in disposing of the body," but also considered "that she admitted to the crime and has no prior criminal record."
Earlier, at the sentencing hearing held in April, the prosecution demanded life imprisonment for A and 4 years in prison for B.
At that time, the prosecution explained the reason for demanding life imprisonment by stating, "After killing the victim, A and B left the body in a reed field for about 40 days, and while searching for a place to dispose of the body, they even took selfies at a scenic spot," and "Although they claim to repent, the circumstances after the crime raise doubts about their genuine remorse."
A was arrested and indicted on charges of killing his ex-girlfriend C (29) by strangling her after repeatedly punching her face during an argument over their breakup at a villa in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, around 10 a.m. on January 12 this year.
After the crime, he left C’s body in the villa for four days, then loaded it into a vehicle on the 15th of the same month, moved to Incheon, and abandoned it near the road around Moksanggyo Bridge on the Gyeongin Ara Waterway. When discovered, C’s body was inside a burlap sack, somewhat decomposed but without signs of mutilation.
After the crime, A also sent text messages to the victim’s family using C’s mobile phone. He sent a message to C’s father, pretending it was from C, saying "Don’t worry."
