Gwangjin-gu Operates 'Non-face-to-face Cognitive Program' for Elderly with Dementia
Delivering Workbooks and Learning Tools to Homes of Elderly Dementia Patients and Sharing Progress via Phone Calls
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Seon-gap), together with the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center, is operating a 'non-face-to-face cognitive program' for dementia elderly and their families in the area who have difficulty going outside due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
This project was prepared to enable dementia elderly to maintain their health through cognitive stimulation activities at home, as the Dementia Safety Center programs were temporarily suspended due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation.
The 'non-face-to-face cognitive program' is provided to the homes of dementia elderly using the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center, by modifying the programs previously operated at the Dementia Safety Center so that the elderly can easily follow them at home.
The district provides necessary worksheets, learning tools, etc., by mail to each home or the Dementia Safety Center program staff visits the home directly to deliver items and guide on how to use them.
Afterwards, the program staff shares the progress of the program remotely via phone calls and also checks on the well-being of the elderly.
The detailed programs include ▲ 'Home Cognitive Worksheets' composed of various problems and contents to improve memory and concentration ▲ 'Mushroom Cultivation' where participants can grow oyster mushrooms themselves ▲ 'Hand Knitting Class' where dementia patients and their families can learn knitting together.
Those who wish to use the non-face-to-face cognitive program or have other inquiries can contact the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center.
In addition, since the 10th, the district has been continuing efforts for dementia elderly in the community by distributing 'Dementia Elderly Care Packages' containing learning tools necessary for the non-face-to-face cognitive program such as tangram puzzles and mushroom cultivation sets, as well as QR code safety return bracelets to prevent missing dementia elderly, to 20 users and waitlisted individuals of the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center Memory Care Shelter.
