Muan-gun Wins Excellence Award at the 16th Local Autonomy Management Competition

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 12th that it received the Excellence Award (Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Award) in the agricultural and specialty products category at the 16th Korea Local Autonomy Management Competition.

This management competition is hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and is held annually to select excellent policies in 10 fields including regional economy, tourism, agriculture and fisheries, and safety from local governments nationwide. It is held every year to discover and spread creative development strategies and distinctive policies.

Despite sluggish consumption of 2018 onions and a nationwide decrease in cultivation area, the production of 2019 onions increased significantly due to favorable weather conditions. To stabilize onion supply and prices, the county prepared and implemented comprehensive measures such as market isolation of some quantities and onion consumption promotion campaigns.

As a result, a total of 750 tons of onions were sold, including 350 tons through post office online sales, 354 tons through 42 institutions and private organizations, and 45.7 tons through a public sector onion purchasing campaign involving about 600 county public officials.

Governor Kim San said, “To help onion farmers struggling due to price collapse caused by overproduction, we took the lead in promoting and advertising Muan onions. The onion consumption promotion campaign expanded to a nationwide level including Jeollanam-do and the National Assembly, achieving results in promoting and consuming Muan onions. We will continue to carry out online and offline agricultural specialty product promotion events and year-round onion consumption promotion publicity.”
