The Environmental Awards are hosted by the Korea Environment Committee and supported by five government ministries including the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The awards ceremony is held annually to promote the development of a sustainable environmental society.
Cheongdo-gun's 'Recyclables Collection Competition,' which has been promoted since 2000, was selected as an 'excellent case' and honored with the grand prize in the resource circulation category. Through this competition, Cheongdo-gun sorts recyclables from waste, which is the main cause of rural environmental pollution, and uses the sales proceeds to carry out projects such as repairing homes for about 10 underprivileged households annually and sharing daily necessities like rice and briquettes.
Over the past 20 years, Cheongdo-gun has collected 130,000 tons of recyclables, with sales proceeds reaching 1.92 billion KRW.
