KCC Evaluates User Protection on YouTube, Facebook, and KakaoTalk
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] YouTube, Facebook, and KakaoTalk have been included this year in the evaluation of user protection tasks conducted by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC).
On the 27th, the KCC decided to conduct the first full evaluation of user protection tasks targeting three internet services: YouTube, Facebook, and KakaoTalk, and to disclose the results around October. These platforms were included in the pilot evaluation for the first time last year and have now been included in the full evaluation this year.
Accordingly, efforts to prevent user damages and handle consumer complaints are expected to increase. The evaluation criteria are based on matters stipulated in the Telecommunications Business Act, including user protection task management systems, damage prevention activities, and performance in handling user opinions or complaints.
The user protection task evaluation is conducted annually under the Telecommunications Business Act to prevent damages to telecommunication service users and to handle users' legitimate opinions or complaints more promptly and efficiently. While the evaluation has mainly focused on basic telecommunication services, there have been ongoing calls to strengthen user protection for value-added telecommunication services as the number of users continues to grow and complaint handling procedures need improvement.
