China warns Hong Kong protesters: "Will not hesitate to use force if necessary for national security"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army stationed in Hong Kong expressed support for the "Hong Kong National Security Law (Hong Kong Security Law)" and demonstrated a commitment to safeguarding China's national security.
This has been interpreted as a warning to Hong Kong protesters that force may be used if necessary.
On the 26th, Chen Daoxiang, commander of the Hong Kong garrison, stated in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV), "We will resolutely implement the central government's decisions and plans and thoroughly realize the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy."
The British daily The Guardian interpreted this as Commander Chen revealing that the 10,000-strong People's Liberation Army troops stationed in Hong Kong are prepared to defend sovereignty.
Earlier, on the 22nd, the National People's Congress (NPC), the legislative body, proposed a draft of the Hong Kong Security Law prohibiting acts such as secession, subversion, and terrorism in Hong Kong. China expressed its intention to enact the Hong Kong Security Law, citing that last year's protests against the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance in Hong Kong threatened national security.
Chen, an NPC delegate, stated regarding the Hong Kong Security Law, "It helps to block separatist forces and foreign interference that seek to undermine China's national unity and represents our firm will to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity."
He added, "As the Hong Kong garrison, we strongly support the Hong Kong Security Law as an important force in safeguarding national security in Hong Kong."
