Mokpo Coast Guard Special Crackdown on Personnel Infringement Offenses Among Maritime Workers
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Superintendent Jeong Young-jin) announced on the 21st that it will conduct a special crackdown on human rights violations among maritime workers in the first half of the year until the 30th of next month.
This special crackdown will focus on human rights violations targeting migrant workers, who are relatively in blind spots regarding human rights.
The crackdown targets include human rights violations against migrant maritime workers, abduction, confinement, assault, and wage extortion of disabled persons at island area fish farms and salt fields, ignoring crew members' requests to disembark from long-term fishing vessels or forced boarding, verbal abuse, assault, and sexual harassment of reserve personnel and trainee crew members on board.
The Mokpo Maritime Police will form a special task force to collect cases of human rights abuses and damages against foreign workers and conduct joint inspections of vulnerable locations and surveys with human rights organizations.
A Mokpo Maritime Police official said, "We will strictly handle any violations detected during this crackdown on human rights abuses against maritime workers according to law and principles," and added, "We urge victims or witnesses to actively report incidents."
