Inha University Establishes Graduate Programs in Urban Regeneration Studies, Smart City Engineering, and Gerontology
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Inha University has established various graduate programs in line with the times.
Inha University announced on the 21st that it will newly open the Urban Regeneration major and Smart City Engineering major in the general graduate school, and the Gerontology department in the Graduate School of Policy, with the first classes starting this September. The Gerontology department has already been conducting classes since March.
Each major is designed around fields of study that have recently gained significant interest in accordance with current trends.
Urban Regeneration is an interdisciplinary field combining resident participation, field-based learning, and collaboration across academic disciplines. It teaches the theories and methods necessary to regenerate old downtown areas, ports, industrial complexes, and islands in social, economic, physical, and environmental aspects, tailored to the characteristics of Incheon and the southwestern metropolitan area.
Additionally, by strengthening field training, it aims to cultivate urban regeneration experts closely connected to the lives of actual citizens. Approximately 30 students are selected annually, and integrated master's and doctoral programs as well as doctoral programs are offered.
The Urban Regeneration major involves professors from various fields such as urban planning and design, regional development, local government, marine development, regional economy, logistics, and urban culture. External experts in urban regeneration are also invited to provide vivid lectures beyond the classroom experience.
Smart City Engineering fosters talent capable of understanding the 'Connected' smart city and solving various urban problems based on urban design, construction, operation, and crisis management skills.
A Connected smart city is a city that links various social overhead capitals within the city through information systems. It is a place where urban facilities are monitored in real-time and future predictions based on this data are possible.
Smart City Engineering is a convergent major involving seven departments: Spatial Information Engineering, Social Infrastructure Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. A total of 19 professors participate. About 25 students are selected annually, and master's, doctoral, and integrated master's and doctoral programs are offered.
The Gerontology department in the Graduate School of Policy, which started classes this semester, is also noteworthy. It is a department studying 'elderly' issues, a new area rarely found in other universities or research institutions.
The curriculum covers all social phenomena related to the elderly, including Introduction to Gerontology, Elderly Policy and Law, Economic Life, Social Participation, Diseases, Nutrition, Health, Family Relations, and Death.
Experts in the field of gerontology teach the courses. The program targets public officials, teachers, public institution workers, and corporate employees. Various scholarship programs reduce the financial burden. Eight new students will be admitted for the second semester of the 2020 academic year.
