Hyundai Steel Improves Quality Using Weather Big Data
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Hyundai Steel is launching a project to improve the quality of steel products by utilizing weather big data.
Hyundai Steel is co-hosting the '2020 Weather Big Data Contest' organized by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and is soliciting ideas on quality management of steel products.
In this contest, Hyundai Steel is conducting a competition under the theme of 'Development of a Prediction Model for Condensation Occurrence on Steel Products inside the Factory.' Through this, they plan to find ways to enhance the efficiency of quality management by predicting and utilizing the impact of weather changes on steel products stored inside the factory in advance.
The Weather Big Data Contest is an annual competition held by the KMA since 2015 to increase public understanding of meteorological and climate big data, expand its application across industries, and discover innovative ideas that combine private big data with meteorological data.
Hyundai Steel, together with the KMA, is sponsoring and hosting this year’s contest and will provide participants with four years’ worth of accumulated internal and external temperature and humidity data from the factory, as well as product temperature data to aid in model development. Additionally, the KMA will provide various public data such as ASOS¹, AWS² observations, and weather forecasts through the Weather Maru platform, enabling participants to utilize these resources to propose highly reliable condensation prediction models.
‘Condensation’ refers to the phenomenon where the temperature of the atmosphere falls below the dew point, causing water droplets to form on the surface of steel materials. Condensation leads to rust or stains on steel, resulting in quality defects. Therefore, accurately predicting and responding to the possibility of condensation in advance to reduce potential quality loss risks is a key challenge for the steel industry.
Through the ‘2020 Weather Big Data Contest,’ Hyundai Steel aims to secure a highly reliable condensation prediction model while also using the opportunity to discover and nurture talented individuals, thereby expanding big data analysis research specialized for the steel industry.
Applications can be submitted through the contest website until May 29, and entries must be submitted by Monday, June 29.
