KF, Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Korea-Bulgaria Diplomatic Relations... Free Exhibition of 'Bulgarian Alphabet'
Introduction to Online and Offline Exhibitions Showcasing the Uniqueness and Excellence of Cyrillic Script
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Korea Foundation (KF), together with the Embassy of Bulgaria in Korea, announced on the 19th that it will hold the Korea-Bulgaria 30th Anniversary Exhibition "Bulgarian Letters - European Alphabets" at the KF Gallery located in Suha-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, from the 20th to June 13.
The "Bulgarian Letters - European Alphabets" exhibition was planned following the 2007 event of the International Triennial of Stage Poster-Sofia, an international poster competition held every three years in Sofia, Bulgaria. A total of 30 artists from 20 countries, including three Bulgarian artists, as well as artists from the United States, Germany, Serbia, Switzerland, and Poland, participated.
These artists, who have long been active in the cultural and artistic fields of their respective countries, studied the characteristics of the Bulgarian alphabet and created typographic design works with unique perspectives and contemporary sensibilities. The 30 exhibited works, matching the number of Bulgarian alphabet letters, share the same format of four colors and 70x100cm size.
The exhibition introduces works that observe and interpret the Bulgarian alphabet from multiple angles, based on the process of inventing Old Bulgarian (Cyrillic script) in the 9th century and the ancient writing system. Visitors can explore the background of how the Bulgarian language, along with Greek and Latin, spread widely as one of the three major alphabets of medieval Europe.
Additionally, the exhibition introduction by Petko Draganov, the Ambassador of Bulgaria to Korea, and a VR exhibition will be released through KF’s social network services (SNS), allowing visitors to enjoy the exhibition both online and offline more richly.
The "Bulgarian Letters - European Alphabets" exhibition was previously introduced at the EU Presidency event held in Paris, France in 2008, and at the "Bulgarian Education and Culture Day" event held in Sofia, Bulgaria. Following this, it was showcased in many countries including Spain (Madrid), the United States (New York, Colorado), Slovenia (Ljubljana), Serbia (Ni?), the Republic of North Macedonia (Skopje), Switzerland (Palace of Geneva), and Finland (Helsinki). In Asia, it is being held in Korea for the first time in 11 years since the exhibition at the Printing Museum in Tokyo, Japan in 2009.
Admission to the exhibition is free, and a "distanced viewing" system limiting the number of visitors per hour is implemented. Visitors must undergo mandatory temperature checks, hand sanitization, wear masks, and register their information before entry. For safety, group visits and docent tours are not provided.
