Meet the Newly Reborn 'Gwang-i & Jin-i' Webtoon After 20 Years
Selected 'Gwang-i & Jin-i' Characters for SNS Trending Use... Easily Deliver and Promote Lunar New Year News Through Webtoon Featuring Characters
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) selected a new character for the district through the ‘Character and Webtoon Contest’ held last February and is launching a unique promotional campaign using webtoons.
This project renovates the existing Gwang-i and Jin-i characters, based on the Ondal General and Princess Pyeonggang concept, to fit recent trends and introduces webtoons as a new promotional method to easily convey district news directly related to residents' daily lives.
The newly selected characters retain their original names, ‘Gwang-i’ and ‘Jin-i’, and will be used for SNS purposes.
‘Gwang-i’ features a hairstyle representing a ferry dock with the Han River and boats, the body is colored green to symbolize eco-friendliness, and the initial ‘G’ is displayed on the clothing.
‘Jin-i’ is inspired by the azalea, the symbolic flower of Gwangjin-gu, using pink and green colors, with a green scarf shaped like the initial ‘J’.
Additionally, the white shoes worn by ‘Gwang-i’ and ‘Jin-i’ represent the clean image of Gwangjin.
Alongside this, a ‘PR Specialist Webtoon Creator’ was selected through the Seoul-type New Deal Jobs program to produce webtoons featuring the characters.
The district will depict history, culture, festivals, and daily life information directly related to residents in webtoon form, providing them through the Gwangjin-gu website’s ‘Gwangjin Hope Toon’, blog, and district newsletter (Achasan Echo).
So far, contents such as ‘Gwangjin Love SNS Promotion Relay’, ‘Library Unmanned Loan Service’, and ‘Online Busking’ have been posted, with plans to continuously upload 5 to 6 episodes monthly.
On May 29 at 2 p.m., the district will distribute ‘Gwang-i and Jin-i’ emoticons free of charge to the first 20,000 participants in the ‘Gwangjin-gu Office KakaoTalk Friend Addition Event’.

Mayor Kim Seon-gap of Gwangjin-gu said, “We discovered new characters that can approach residents in a friendly way suited to the SNS promotional environment and introduced a new promotional method in webtoon format to easily deliver district news in the untact era.”
He added, “In particular, this project is significant as it serves as a stepping stone for stable youth employment by providing young amateur webtoon artists participating in the district’s webtoon promotion project with experience and education to incorporate various district news into webtoons.”
