[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) is partnering directly with universities to cultivate specialized personnel for urban regeneration.

On the 15th, LH announced that it signed a business agreement with six universities?Kyungpook National University, Kyungsung University, Korea University, Gwangju University, Inha University, and Chungbuk National University?at the Korea Press Center in Seoul to successfully promote the urban regeneration specialized personnel training project.

As urban regeneration projects have gradually expanded recently, there has been a steady increase in demand for experts equipped with capabilities for not only community revitalization programs and resident capacity-building projects but also physical projects such as small-scale maintenance. In response, the government held a public contest in February to select hub universities for urban regeneration personnel training and designated six universities as the nation’s first urban regeneration hub universities.

This agreement was pursued to establish a consultative body between the six universities and LH, the education supervising institution, to build a more effective personnel training system. According to the agreement, the hub universities will collaborate on developing common urban regeneration textbooks and on curriculum, credits, and lecture exchanges. LH will cooperate by dispatching urban regeneration experts for knowledge sharing and supporting related employees’ enrollment in educational programs.

The newly established master's and doctoral programs in urban regeneration will begin in the second semester. Each university plans to operate curricula tailored to regional conditions, including theoretical education and practical training linked with urban regeneration support centers. Students can earn an urban regeneration degree by completing essential courses related to urban regeneration while taking their major subjects such as urban studies, architecture, and finance. Through this project, about 100 urban regeneration experts are expected to be produced annually in the future.

Byun Chang-hoom, President of LH, said, "Through collaboration between LH and universities, we will nurture experts who will lead urban regeneration in Korea, and we expect urban regeneration projects to gradually spread within local communities." He added, "We will continue to work with universities to enhance the execution power of urban regeneration by developing business models and improving systems."
