Yeongdeungpo-gu to Return 790 Million KRW in Unclaimed Local Taxes to Taxpayers
Operation of 'Local Tax Unclaimed Refunds Intensive Settlement Period' until May 31... Total 794 million KRW... Measure to Protect Residents' Property Rights... Data Updated and Notices Sent on May 11... Refund Applications via Seoul eTax, Government24, and Resident SMS Service Available
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Cha Hyun-il) is operating a focused period for organizing local tax unclaimed refunds until May 31 to return 794 million won in local tax unclaimed refunds to the residents.
Local tax unclaimed refunds occur due to causes such as △double or erroneous payments △transfer of vehicle ownership after annual automobile tax prepayment △reduction due to national tax correction, and most are small amounts under 50,000 won that are easily overlooked.
Since local tax refunds automatically expire five years after the refund decision date, the district has prepared support measures to help residents reclaim their rights.
The district's local tax unclaimed refunds amount to 3,081 cases (as of April 20, 2020), totaling approximately 794 million won, with actual unclaimed amounts under 50,000 won accounting for 2,657 cases (86.2%).
The district is updating information such as the names and addresses of unclaimed refund recipients and has been sending refund notices to the targets since the 11th.
For small unclaimed refunds under 100,000 won, if six months have passed since the payment decision date, the amount will be pre-allocated to registration license tax, automobile tax, property tax, resident tax, etc.
In addition, if the refund target is deceased, a notice will be sent to the heirs, and unclaimed refunds under 100,000 won will be paid to the main heir after six months.
Refund applications can be made through Seoul City eTax (etax.seoul.go.kr), Government24 (www.gov.kr), or the smartphone app (STAX). Applications can also be made by phone (☎2670-3215~6) or fax to the district tax collection department.
In particular, since last year, the district has implemented a 24-hour text message application service, supporting residents to apply for refunds with a single text message (☎070-4275-1607), enhancing convenience for residents.
