60s Fined for Embezzling Employment Incentives for Visually Impaired
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] A man in his 60s who employed visually impaired individuals but failed to pay their wages properly and embezzled their employment incentives was sentenced to a fine.
On the 14th, the Criminal Division 3 of Cheongju District Court (Judge Ko Chun-soon) announced that A (60), who was indicted without detention on charges of violating the Act on the Promotion of Employment and Vocational Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons, was sentenced to a fine of 5 million won.
The court stated, "It is difficult to consider the 3% stake in the experience center facility, which is facing closure due to financial difficulties, as a substitute for the cash wages that should have been paid to the Grade 1 visually impaired employees," and explained the sentencing reason, "Considering the circumstances under which confirmation letters regarding wage receipt were obtained from the visually impaired employees, the consistent unreasonable excuses, and the inability to reflect on the wrongdoing."
A was prosecuted for operating a visually impaired experience center in Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju City, from April to June last year, hiring five Grade 1 visually impaired employees, failing to pay their wages, and fraudulently obtaining 8.1 million won in employment incentives from the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled by falsifying documents.
A claimed that instead of paying wages, there was a mutual agreement to provide a 3% stake in the experience center and 500,000 won as living expenses, but this was not accepted.
