Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology Donates Science Books and PCs to Local Children's Centers
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (President Kim Gi-seon·GIST) is accelerating efforts to establish a support system for social contribution activities, strengthen mutual linkage, and promote non-face-to-face online education.
The GIST Social Contribution Group recently announced on the 14th that it donated science-related new books worth 6 million won to a total of six local children's centers in the Gwangju area, and 14 PCs to 14 centers.
The Social Contribution Group has been donating science books to local children's centers every year since 2003.
This PC donation was promoted as an alternative to encourage online learning to fill the learning gap as the 'GIST Learning Yard' activities shifted from offline to non-face-to-face classes due to the impact of COVID-19.
The Learning Yard is a knowledge-sharing volunteer activity where GIST students visit local children's centers once a week to work as after-school teachers. This year, it was expanded to 44 centers, but recently, due to the impact of COVID-19, face-to-face classes have been suspended and real-time learning guidance is being conducted using online methods.
In addition, GIST Learning Yard mentors actively support online learning at local children's centers by producing video content such as science kit experiment videos and the Scientist Series related to questions about science.
Park Sung-gyu, Director of External Cooperation, said, "We expect this to be a great opportunity for the future dream trees of our region to increase their interest in numerous roles such as responding to future changes and the development of the scientific environment through scientific exploration using books and media, and to grow as global leaders in science and technology."
A director of a local children's center said, "GIST's PC donation will be a great help for children who are having difficulties with online learning using PCs due to sudden changes in the educational environment," and added, "We are grateful that students in the Gwangju area will have the opportunity to indirectly experience various future sciences."
