China Also Faces Concerns Over COVID-19 Resurgence... Sharp Increase in New Cases (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] In some regions of China, the sudden increase in new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has raised concerns about the virus's resurgence.
On the 11th, the National Health Commission of China (NHC) announced that as of midnight, 17 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in China. Among the 17 cases, 7 were imported cases infected overseas and entered China, while 10 were locally transmitted cases within China. The newly added local infections in one day were 5 in Hubei Province, 3 in Jilin Province, 1 in Liaoning Province, and 1 in Heilongjiang Province.
The Chinese government also reported 12 new asymptomatic infections in one day, which are not included in the official confirmed case statistics. All of these were locally transmitted cases. Asymptomatic infections refer to individuals who test positive for COVID-19 but do not exhibit specific symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat. Among the asymptomatic infections, 6 converted to symptomatic new confirmed cases within one day, and cases of asymptomatic infections turning into confirmed cases continue to emerge. Currently, there are a total of 780 asymptomatic infections under medical observation in China.
In particular, following the Labor Day holiday (May 1-5), when population movement was high, new confirmed cases and asymptomatic infections continue to appear in some regions due to cluster infections, increasing concerns about the virus's resurgence.
All 5 new confirmed cases reported in Hubei Province in one day came from a neighborhood on Changqing Street in Dongxihu District, Wuhan City. Including a previously reported confirmed case, there are currently 6 COVID-19 patients receiving treatment in Hubei Province. Additionally, among the 12 asymptomatic infections reported nationwide in one day, 11 were from Hubei Province.
Jilin and Liaoning Provinces are also on high alert due to cluster infections. In Jilin Province, 11 people were classified as new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the 9th, followed by 3 additional confirmed cases the day before. All of these individuals reside in Jilin City and Shulan City in Jilin Province and are related to cluster infections. Currently, 15 confirmed cases related to community transmission are hospitalized in Jilin Province, and 276 people are under quarantine observation at designated facilities. Regarding imported cases, 6 are receiving treatment and 76 are in quarantine.
As the spread worsened, local authorities raised the risk level of Shulan City from 'medium risk' to 'high risk' as of the previous day. Shulan City sealed off the apartment complex and workplace buildings where cases occurred and conducted comprehensive disinfection.
In Liaoning Province, one new confirmed case was reported in Shenyang the day before. This patient arrived in Shenyang by high-speed train from Shulan, Jilin Province, where a COVID-19 cluster infection occurred on the last day of the Labor Day holiday, May 5. Authorities believe this patient is linked to the cluster infection in Jilin Province. This is the first new confirmed case in Liaoning Province since April 16.
Previously, Heilongjiang Province also raised alarms when many Chinese nationals entering China from Russia through Suifenhe tested positive. In Heilongjiang Province, 10 community transmission cases (7 in Harbin, 3 in Mudanjiang) and 18 imported cases are still hospitalized. On the 10th alone, 556 people visited hospitals with fever symptoms, and the number of people under medical observation reached about 1,000.

A diplomatic source in Beijing said, "Recently, new confirmed cases and asymptomatic infections have been concentrated in some regions of China, raising concerns about the virus's resurgence. Especially in Hubei Province, many people left the area after lockdown easing measures, so the fact that many new confirmed and asymptomatic cases are from Hubei Province is a concerning factor for virus resurgence."
